Our featured artist for the month of June is currently a
resident of Charlotte, North Carolina. Born in Canada, Leighton
did not begin to paint until he was 60. During a summer sabbatical
in Vancouver, British Columbia he casually picked up in the home
where he was staying one of Betty Edwards's books on drawing,
and was fascinated.
"I had never thought of drawing or painting", he says.
"I thought I could
not draw a circle or a straight line". But that encounter
began his love of
painting, especially watercolor and pastel scenes from places
his travels
have taken him, from Australia to Croatia, Canada to Ireland.
An adopted child, he learned after he began to paint that he
is related
through his birth father to the famous Canadian artist, Lawren
Harris,
one of the founders of the Group of Seven.
"Painting taught me more than to see the world around in
a fresh way",
Leighton says. "It also taught me to slow down, and to
look with insight
on the people I meet, and the younger leaders I have the privilege
to
mentor".
He has pursued his calling as a Presbyterian minister, preaching
in over
forty countries, often in years past partnering with his brother-in-law
Billy Graham. Now he heads an organization which focuses on leadership
and
spiritual mentoring of emerging leaders. Inspired by Vincent
Van Gogh's
description of Jesus as "more of an artist than the artists",
Leighton
Ford also seeks to be an artist of the soul, and a friend on
the
journey.
Reverend Ford will be signing his brand new giclee editions,
along with
his book in the Gallery during the June "TOUR DE ART",
a program of the
Avery County COALITION OF GALLERIES.
